How we research
Tape Rolling is a directory of recording studios indexed by gear. Every listing is built from publicly available information published by the studios themselves.
Sources
Each room listing cites its source — usually the studio's own website, equipment list or booking page. We read published gear lists, floor plans, photos and session descriptions. We do not rely on user submissions, social-media posts or hearsay.
Every fact in the directory links back to the page it came from. When a source page changes or goes offline, we flag the listing for re-verification.
What we index
- Consoles — the mixing desk in each room, mapped to a console family.
- Tape machines — multitrack and mixdown decks.
- Outboard — compressors, equalizers, reverbs and effects processors.
- Preamps — standalone microphone preamplifiers.
- Microphones — the studio's published mic locker.
- Monitors — main and nearfield monitoring systems.
Gear lists are partial by nature. Studios do not always publish every piece of equipment, and shared gear may not be available in every room. We list what is documented; we never pad a listing with assumptions.
Accuracy and updates
Studios buy, sell and move gear. A listing is a snapshot of what a studio has published at the time we collected it. Each listing shows when it was last checked. If you spot an error, or if your studio's gear has changed, you can update your listing through our studio claim process.
What we do not do
- We do not take booking fees or commissions. Inquiries go directly to the studio.
- We do not rank studios. Listings are sorted alphabetically or by recency of documentation.
- We do not guarantee availability, pricing or session fit. Confirm everything directly.
Current coverage
The directory currently documents 16 rooms across 15 studios. Coverage is expanding; if your city or studio is not yet listed, it may be in our research pipeline.
